The following is a summary of the five-year action plan for the Manistee County Recreation Plan:
Vision The Manistee County Recreation Plan supports and enhances countywide recreational opportunities by leveraging resources to improve the quality of life for residents, promote economic development, and improve access to freshwater, natural resources, and recreational facilities.
Goals
Goal 1: Create community awareness of countywide recreational opportunities and promote them to citizens and tourists.
Goal 2: Identify and encourage accessibility improvements at recreational assets by incorporating Universal Design in all new updates and when upgrading existing amenities, as appropriate.
Goal 3: Further develop a multi-use pathway system throughout Manistee County.
Goal 4: Promote and provide diverse recreational opportunities to satisfy all age groups and levels of ability.
Goal 5: Preserve, protect, and enhance natural, cultural, and historical resources by maintaining their significance within Manistee County, while minimizing environmental impacts.
Action Plan
Actions for 2008 through 2013:
- Establish a recreation group, such as an authority, parks commission, or advisory group for Manistee County that reflects the diversity and represents the political entities of the entire county, to facilitate, manage, monitor, and seek resources to implement this recreation plan. Complete by end of 2008.
- Meet and form a group that is responsible for the development of the recreational asset database and guidebook. Complete by end of 2009.
- Investigate alternative funding sources for long-term maintenance and funding for countywide recreation. Complete by end of 2009.
- Continue to seek funding for universal access to select lakes and rivers. Continuous through 2013.
- Develop a countywide pathway system using existing resources already developed as base information. Work at the county level to secure path easements. Continuous through 2013.
- Acquire additional land or develop existing county property holdings for use as county parks. Continuous through 2013.
